This retrospective exhibition, organised to mark the award of the 2009 National Photography Prize to Gervasio Sánchez, reflects a protracted 25-year journey of tenacious endeavour in numerous war and post-war scenarios; places that reveal the harshness of our times, and in which the unfairly forgotten victims of such barbarity languish.
His photographs have now become a potent reminder to ensure that no future generation will be able to doubt the past. The product of unwavering courage, these photos immerse us in bleak realities that many prefer to ignore. This rich output of images makes an unquestionable contribution to photo-reportage, and shows how it can be used to dignify the victims portrayed with a particular perspective that extols the highest values of photojournalism.
