I’ve always been keen on the arts. As a little girl I dreamed of dancing, painting and acting, but I never imagined that I would be able to realize these dreams in my work as a photographer.
I started the “Pas de Deux” series when Avril, my eldest daughter, joined the National Ballet School in Havana. I was motivated to photograph the ballet dancers in situations outside the aesthetic perfection of their performances on stage. I was looking for an even more authentic expression of their personalities. I wanted to tell their story from a different viewpoint, while remaining true to their essence. I wanted to capture the energy emanating from the interaction of their bodies through the lens of my camera. “Pas de Deux” is a dance that emerges from the play between the dancers and myself as a photographer.
