PILLAGE

Pillage is the visual outcome of an investigation into the roots and consequences of the conflicts affecting two of Africa’s most important countries: The Democratic Republic of the Congo and Nigeria, to which the author has devoted a large part of her recent work.
Although the reasons for the war and its persistence are numerous and complex, wealth and the people amassing it have a direct impact on the cause of almost all these conflicts.
The extraction of coltan (tantalite) in DR Congo or of oil in Nigeria have not improved the lives of the local populations in any way whatsoever. Quite the opposite, in fact, as their plundering by foreign multinationals and the corruption of local authorities have led to the violence that ravages and impoverishes the people, especially women.
