The photography project called “Dark tourism?/Turismo oscuro?” introduces us to a series of places of great historical interest that are marked by death and tragedy.
Manuel Clemente, whose previous projects -Ghost towns and Forgotten ruins- explore the themes of abandon and desolation, now sets out to document and analyse the interest generated today by places that although far removed from the criteria of the traditional tourist industry receive thousands of visitors each year.
Manuel Clemente, however, adds a question mark to his project’s name. For him, far from plunging him into darkness, visiting these places has brought him closer to a radiant hope that at the same time is both responsible and demanding, which should help us as human beings to avoid committing the absurd errors of the past.
